The Volkswagen Karmann Coachbuilt Club is the World's largest community of Volkswagen Karmann Coachbuilt owners. Members who live all around the World. From mainland Europe - UK, Germany, Sweden, Holland, Norway etc, stretching across the Atlantic to the USA, Canada and farther around the globe to Australia. Our members own a wide variety of Karmanns ranging from the early Volkswagen Type2 (Bay Window) Karmanns to the very latest Karmann's which are still being sold today.

The club owns and operates the only "Karmann Coachbuilts Register" and at present this Register contains details of in excess of  300 Vehicles.

Our website and forum have been created to allow the Karmann owners to share information about these vehicles and with a specific aim of helping all the VW Karmann owners enjoy Karmann experience to the full.

We hope you enjoy your visit to our site and if you own a Karmann or you are thinking of buying one, please do join the forum.

Fixed News Sticky The search continues for the Stolen Karmann T4 Gipsy and your eagle eyes would be appreciated. More details of this stolen vehicle can be found by clicking here. The thieving low-lifes who stole this vehicle should never be allowed to benefit from it's theft. This news item will remain at the top of our new list until the vehicle is found. Please see below for the rest of the latest news.
22nd June 11 And still they turn up!! Latest figures are: Cheetah's and Gipsys's (208), LT Distance Wide (36), Missouri's (1) and Colorado's (8), Bahia Tropic's (2). The total Karmann Coachbuilt count now stands at 255.
25th May 11

220 of the older type of Karmanns! They just keep coming. This number excludes the T2 Gipsy's (11 in total), T4 Cheetah's and Gipsys (11), Missouri's (1) and Colorado's (8). We also know of  2 Bahia Tropic's (although on the Mercedes chassis) and other VW Coachbuilt makes. So we can confidently say 253 Karmann's :-)

We are still missing a significant number of the Karmann Production numbers on the 'Karmann Register'. The Register is a useful reference for all owners in many ways and helps us understand the Karmann production line and process. Please, if you have not provided details of your Karmann Production number for inclusion in the Register, let us know the details. Thanks.

12th Mar 11 It's been a while since the last update to this front page, but that does not mean the website or forum has been idle - far from it. The forum is a hive of activity caused in a small way by the above restorations which are in progress, but new Karmann owners arriving on the forum from around the World. We now have a large number of owners from Germany on the forum and the forum sections has been changed so they are both in English and German. The holiday season is upon us so everyone is preparing for their  holidays whilst several members haven't stopped camping since last Summer! At this means the forum is very active at present.

In the past 4 months, we have discovered yet more surviving Karmann's. Incredibly, the number of Gipsy's has reach 153 up by 12 since January. This is a far cry from 24 months ago when the number was less than 30! The number of Cheetah's produced was far less than the Gipsy therefore an increase by one in their numbers in not disappointing. Karmann Distance Wide's also increased their count by one also.

In just under one month we are holding our 2nd Karmann Treffen in Derbyshire. Last year approximately 30 Karmann spent a great weekend in the Peak District. The event was to prove to be the largest gathering of Karmann's known. This year we are expecting a similar number. The campsite on which we are staying should be renamed for the weekend as "Karmann Village"!

25 Jan 11 The number of known T3 Gipsy's has reached 141. That represents and increase of 17 since our last report. Not to be out done, Cheetahs have yet again increased their count by 4 making a grand total of 27. It would be unfair if the LT population didn't increase in size and I am pleased to report that their numbers have grown to 29 (up 3). See below for the statistics. Thanks.
08 Nov 10 Details of our 2nd Karmann Treffen has been announced. Please see the 'Events' section of the Karmann Forum for more details.

T3 Karmann Gipsy and Cheetah's

In total 741 T3 Karmann Gipsy’s were manufactured on the chassis of Volkswagen T3 (T25 / Transporter / Vanagon). This number excludes 30+ 14" wheeled Syncro models made between 1986 and 1989 and 7 Syncro 16″ wheeled models made between 1990 and 1992. Parallel to the Gipsy production, 113 Karmann Cheetah’s were manufactured by Karmann between 1980 and 1992 to make a grand total of 891 T3 examples.

At present the "Karmann Register" contains details of 227 surviving Gipsy's (192) and Cheetahs (35), but there are many more out there we don't know about. It is understood that there are 6 of these vehicles in North America, but 4 of these need to be confirmed. To my knowledge, two examples have so far been 'written off' (road traffic accident) in the UK and one scrapped in Germany representing 2% lost. If we were to apply that 'lost' percentage to the total Karmann production figures, this means there are a maximum of 871 surviving examples. The exact number of surviving may never be known.

The Gipsy and Cheetah's on these pages and represented on the forum are just a mere 26.05% of the total Karmann Gipsy/Cheetah survivors. One wonders where are the others!

Total Gipsy's Produced: 778 Known examples surviving: 192 Survival Rate: 24.67%
Total Cheetah's Produced: 113 Known examples surviving: 35 Survival Rate: 30.97%

Come on you Gipsy & Cheetah owners, let us know who and where you are!!

Karmann LT Distance Wide's

During the years of 1978 to 1996 approximately 3,103 Karmann Coachbuilt LT Distance Wides were produced. These models were named the LT "M", LT "L 1", LT "L 2", LT "L Distance Wide", LT "L Distance-Wide Gold", LT "H Distance-Wide", LT "H Distance-Wide Gold", LT "S Distance-Wide" and the ultimate Karmann of that time, the LT "Distance-Wide Autovilla" (see here).

At present we know of only 40 Karmann LT's, so the known survivor figures are (at least at present) far worse than that of the Gipsy/Cheetah's production. The LT's known represent just a mere 1.29% of the total Karmann LT production. Where are the others?!!

Other Coachbuilts - Foster & Day, Tischer and Jurgens

Although this is site dedicated to Karmann Coachbuilts, we welcome among our members three other coachbuilts types, these being the Foster and Day, Tischer and Jurgens.

Foster & Day Coachbuilts were British made (Foster and Day, 1050 Manchester Road, Castleton, Rochdale, Lancashire), but sadly they no longer exist. We currently know of 15 examples. Foster and Day produced a limited number of Motorhomes and the Volkswagen T3 was just one base vehicle they used. They also built some larger motorhomes which based on the GMC and Iveco chassis (all ex-Ambulances). To our knowledge, 17 Volkswagen T3 Foster and Day Coachbuilts were produced also making them also a rare Motorhome. We know of 88% of the total production, so where are the other 2?

Tischer are more famously known for the demountable living units and we know that only 3 Tischer Coachbuilts were ever made. These were built specifically for a customer of Tischer for the rental market. We know two of the three Tischer Coachbuilts are still alive - one is in the UK. This makes the Tischer Coachbuilt the rarest of all T3 Coachbuilts.

As any knowledgeable Karmann owner knows, the Karmann Coachbuilts design originated from Jurgens of South Africa back in the early 1970's. It is not known how many surviving Jurgens there are, but we do have one member who owns a T3 Jurgen. The T3 Jurgen's conversion is quite unique. We would welcome any further information on the Jurgens conversion (or indeed any of the coachbuilt types mentioned above).
